Too Much Sleep Is Secretly Wrecking Your Body, Scientists Warn

Too little sleep ages you. Turns out, too much does too. A massive new study pinpoints the sweet spot: roughly 6.4 to 7.8 hours a night, and straying too far in either direction speeds up aging in nearly every organ in your body.

The Study

Researchers analyzed data from about half a million people in the UK Biobank, using 23 separate "aging clocks" that track biological aging across 17 different organ systems, everything from the brain and heart to the liver and lungs. The findings were published in the journal Nature.

Unlike older tools that produce a single age estimate for the whole body, these clocks zero in on individual organs using blood proteins, imaging data, and metabolic markers. That approach revealed something new: sleep doesn't just affect the brain; it's tied to how fast nearly every organ system ages.

The research team, led by Columbia University radiology professor Junhao Wen, built on earlier findings that connected sleep to brain aging and disease burden. This new analysis extended that link throughout the body, pointing to sleep as a factor in a coordinated network involving metabolic balance and immune health, not just cognitive function.

The Sweet Spot: 6.4 to 7.8 Hours

When researchers compared reported sleep duration against biological age across all 23 clocks, a clear pattern emerged. People sleeping less than 6 hours or more than 8 hours showed faster biological aging. The lowest aging rates showed up in people sleeping between 6.4 and 7.8 hours a night.

One important caveat: this doesn't prove that sleep duration alone causes organs to age faster or slower. It's more likely that sleeping too little or too much is a signal of poorer overall health, rather than a direct cause.

The Disease List Is Long

Short sleep was strongly linked to depression and anxiety disorders, backing up years of research connecting poor sleep to mental health struggles. It was also tied to obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, ischemic heart disease, and heart arrhythmias.

Both short and long sleep were connected to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, plus digestive issues like gastritis and acid reflux. That range of conditions spans nearly every major organ system, underscoring how deeply sleep duration appears woven into overall physical health.

Short Sleepers and Long Sleepers May Need Different Treatment

The researchers took a deeper look at late-life depression to understand how sleep and organ aging interact. Using a statistical technique called mediation analysis, they tried to untangle whether biological aging helps explain the sleep-depression connection.

The results suggest short sleep is more directly tied to late-life depression, while long sleep appears to influence depression indirectly, through aging changes in the brain and fat tissue. In other words, short sleepers and long sleepers may be arriving at the same depression outcome through entirely different biological routes, a distinction researchers say matters for how doctors approach treatment and future therapies for each group.
