Scott Winters, a 55-year-old pastor based in Florida, has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. Allegedly, OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT, provided the pastor with dangerous medical advice that led to delayed care in the treatment of a life-threatening pulmonary embolism. Reportedly, ChatGPT downplayed Winters’ symptoms, assuring him that they were “not something serious.” Moreover, it drew on his past conversation, religious beliefs, and told him “God did not design your body to endlessly fail.”
What went wrong
Winters had been using ChatGPT for general and health questions since 2024. But this time, the chatbot suggested he stay home and not go to the hospital immediately, even though he had severe dizziness and blood pressure issues, according to reports. The lawsuit also says that ChatGPT continued to use Christian language and give holistic reassurance, such as “Even this is under God’s watch.”
