ATLANTA – In his campaign to “Make America Healthy Again,” Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has drawn attention to what he says is the overmedication of children.
During a news conference in September, the secretary said the National Institute of Health is looking into the potential connection “between overmedicating our kids and this violence,” referencing what he described as a sudden onset of mass shootings.
The secretary has signaled a desire to tackle what he considers overmedication of children.
Critics argue broad statements about “overmedicating kids” are putting children who are in need of such help at risk. For some children, properly dosed ADHD medications are valid.
While Washington’s fights over Medicare and pharmaceutical costs dominate headlines, some health policy analysts say a quieter trend has been brewing — one that could become a major focus of federal review in 2026.
