A GP reveals the 5 supplements you’re wasting your money on – and what to take instead

Scroll through any feed or open a podcast queue and you will find an endless stream of tinctures, capsules and powders suggesting improved longevity, optimised health and peak vitality.

The modern wellness industry thrives on this desire for a shortcut to living longer and better, although it does beg the question: how many of these expensive habits actually move the needle for your long-term health and, more pressingly, which ones aren’t worth your time, money or attention?

We spoke with Dr. Adam Staten, a general practitioner with the NHS and Medical Director at One Day Tests, to cut through the noise.

NAD Supplements

The start of 2026 saw a five-year high in search engine interest for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, better known as NAD, often associated with improved energy production and metabolic reactions, two key markers in increasing our longevity.

“Levels of NAD fall naturally as we age, which has led to lots of research interest in whether replenishing falling NAD levels may help slow or reverse age-related problems,” says Dr. Staten.

“To date, there is no convincing evidence that this works. NAD supplements are very expensive and there is evidence that very high levels of NAD caused by over-supplementation may contribute to risks of heart attacks, strokes, diabetes and even cancer.”
