Osteoporosis is a silent systemic disease often diagnosed only after a bone fracture has occurred. According to the most recent report, musculoskeletal conditions – that includes osteoporosis – are widespread among men and raise serious risk.
The report, published in February, reveals something specialists in this area know only too well – and that is that exercise reduces the risk of musculoskeletal disorders by 40% in men over 50. With that in mind, we spoke to some medical experts about the health condition and how men can help themselves by incorporating fitness into their daily lives.
“Osteoporosis is often thought of as a women’s disease, but that misconception has left many men underdiagnosed and undertreated,” explained Dr. Strickland – who is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is an active member of leading professional organizations including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM).
