Lagging in energy a little bit after a workout isn't uncommon, nor is feeling a little lethargic at the gym when you exercised rigorously the day before. But you don't have to feel this way, says registered dietitian and TODAY nutrition editor Natalie Rizzo.
Most people are focused on getting enough protein before and after working out because they've likely heard it's crucial for muscle recovery, but it turns out that another macronutrient is just as vital, advises Rizzo, who specializes in sports nutrition. The macronutrient in question is carbohydrates.
But if you're thinking that her advice means you need to load up on bread, pasta or rice after every workout to get the muscle-boosting, think again.
