Brain health: Poor sleep linked to faster brain aging

Consistently getting a good night’s sleep seems more important than ever after researchers from the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden published their findings on sleep and brain age.

The scientists analyzed a large group of adults using detailed brain scans to estimate each person’s “brain age.” A person’s brain age should ideally match up with their chronological age.

After going through information provided by the participants about their sleep habits, the researchers learned that people with sleep issues or poor sleep hygiene were more likely to have an advanced brain age.

Sleep problems impact mood, heart health, inflammation

In theNational Health Interview Survey from 2020, 14.5% of adults reported regularly having difficulty sleeping.

People struggle with sleep for many reasons, which can range from insomnia to sleep apnea. Not getting enough rest can have impacts beyond simply feeling sluggish the next day, though.

Some research indicates that chronic sleep issues can impact one’s mood and raise the risk of health issues, such as having a heart attack. The latter likely occurs because poor sleep disrupts the body’s immune system, which can increase inflammation.

The researchers in the new study took a closer look at sleep and brain age by studying more than 27,000 adults in the United Kingdom.
