A Heart Condition Didn’t Stop Shaun White From Winning 3 Olympic Golds

Here’s a sobering fact: Every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a heart attack, and heart disease still kills more Americans than all cancers and accidents combined. It’s the number one killer of both men and women—but many heart conditions are totally treatable if they’re caught early.

Case in point: Since he was diagnosed at just one year old, former professional snowboarder and three-time Olympic gold medalist Shaun White didn’t let his congenital heart condition, Tetralogy of Fallot, hold him back.

Similarly, Carly Pearce, a Grammy-winning American country music singer and songwriter, was diagnosed with pericarditis, which is inflammation of the tissue surrounding the heart, at age 29. Today, thanks to the fact that she advocated for and educated herself, the condition is just a part of her life, rather than something that’s taken it over.

In the fourth episode of The Future You, Pearce and White sit down with host and editorial director of Men’s and Women’s Health, Rich Dorment, to share their lived experiences and advice for other men and women, whether or not they’re living with a heart-related condition.

The trio is joined by Sunil Rao, MD, a cardiologist from NYU Langone Health, who shares what he’s most excited about when it comes to preventive cardiology in 2025.

Here’s a look at some of the themes covered in the episode:
