Whether you like it or not, your 40s have officially entered the chat. This new stage of life is when hormonal shifts set in, muscle mass declines, and your body simply doesn’t bounce back like it used to. If you don’t make some key changes to your fitness and wellness routine now, you could be in for a rude awakening down the road. That’s why we spoke with a trainer who breaks down 10 non-negotiable fitness rules he gives all male clients over 40.

Establishing a regular training regimen is the name of the game if you want to remain functional, full of energy, and independent well into your 40s, 50s, and beyond.

“What’s truly inspiring is how men over 40 (especially those who’ve never trained seriously before), experience transformative changes when they incorporate training into their routine,” says Louis Chandler,C.P.T.at Alo Moves. “Beyond the obvious physical improvements like better posture, reduced joint pain, or increased energy, I often see mental shifts: increased confidence, reduced anxiety, and a greater sense of control over their lives.”

Chandler recommends exercising at least three to four times a week, focusing on strength training, low-intensity cardio, and mobility work.
