William Goodge Shares the Exact Training Plan He Followed to Run 3,800km Across Australia

Running 2,361 miles in just 35 days – the equivalent of 2.5 marathons each day – is the feat British ultra-runner William Goodge somehow managed to achieve in May. But that doesn't mean he logged ridiculous miles, or spent endless hours training in preparation for the attempt to run across Australia.

Instead, Goodge completed 'up to' nine training sessions a week, supplementing his efforts with stretching, cold-water immersion and infrared saunas. Sticking to a regimented but not unachievable daily routine, Goodge woke at 6am and kept his diet clean by eating whole foods – but also found time to let his hair down.

'I do a stretch routine. That opens me up and makes me feel a lot better about the day in general and any exercise that’s gonna come,' Goodge explained to the Standard. 'As for training, I do up to nine sessions a week. After stretching I’ll go for a run. The most standardised session is an easy hour. Nothing too intense. Then I will do a strength session later in the day for an hour or two.
