Experts Just Discovered Additional Early Warning Signs For Dementia

It’s understandable to be nervous about dementia if you or someone you love is suddenly forgetting important names and dates. But a new study just uncovered two more potential early warning signs of dementia, and they’re pretty surprising.

The study, which was published in the journal Neurology, suggests that there are a few more things to have on your radar when weighing in on whether to talk to a healthcare professional about cognitive issues. While they’re common, noticing these warning signs along with more classic symptoms of dementia may help lead to an earlier diagnosis and help. Here’s what the researchers discovered.

What did the study find?

For the study, researchers tracked nearly 2,200 adults with an average age of 79 who didn’t have dementia at the start of the study. Each participant wore a heart monitor for an average of 12 days to track their rest and activity, along with their circadian rhythm. After that, the researchers tracked them for about three more years. (During that time, 176 people were diagnosed with dementia.)
